NY Mayor Bloomberg Responds to Sarah Palin
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has responded to the calls of former Alaska governor Sarah Palin for New Yorkers not to accept a proposed Muslim community center and mosque near Ground Zero. He said he could not disagree more.
The mayor said that building the center and the mosque is “a great message for the world that, unlike in other places where they might actually ban people from wearing burquas or building a building, that’s not what America was founded on nor is it what America should become.”
He however said that he does believe that Palin, who ran for the vice presidency in 2008, is not a racist.
Palin sent the following message last Sunday, July 19, via Twitter: “Peaceful New Yorkers, pls refute the Ground Zero mosque plan if you believe catastrophic pain caused @ Twin Towers site is too raw, too real.” It was followed by this other message an hour later: “Peace-seeking Muslims, pls understand, Ground Zero mosque is UNNECESSARY provocation; it stabs hearts. Pls reject it in interest of healing.”
Bloomberg said that he respects the opinions of Palin. However, he also respects the opinion of those who want to build the center and the mosque.
