Obama on ‘Late Show with David Letterman’ (video)

U.S. President Barack Obama paid a visit to the Ed Sullivan Theater on Monday (September 21, 2009). During the interview, the commander-in-chief revealed a deep personal secret to Dave—he’s always been black.

Asked by the veteran talk-show host if he believes racism factored into recent criticism over health care reform, the president said: “First of all, I think it’s important to realize that I was actually black before the election.”

“Really!” exclaimed Letterman, to which Obama replied, “It’s true.”

On Afghanistan issue, the president pointed out that he would not yet make a decision on sending more American troops. “I’ve got to make sure that the policy in place was worthy of their sacrifice,” he said.

Dave also asked about the summer activities of first daughters Malia and Sasha. Obama said that they “goofed off,” which he added was something he couldn’t do. The 62-year-old comedian responded, “Well, you have,” prompting a big laugh from both the audience and the president.

Obama has appeared on “Letterman” five times before, and his appearance Monday night marks the first time a sitting President has been on the program.
