Orlando Gets Arenas, Turkoglu, Richardson in 3-Team Trade
With competition becoming stiffer in the Eastern Conference, the Orlando Magic acquired Gilbert Arenas, Hedo Turkoglu, and Jason Richardson on Saturday in a three-team trade that also involved the Phoenix Suns and the Washington Wizards.
The major trade came as the Magic are suffering a slide, losing five of their last six games and dropping out of first place to fourth place in the Eastern Conference. Orlando sent Rashard Lewis to Washington while Phoenix received Vince Carter, Mickael Pietrus, Marcin Gortat, and a 2011 first-round draft pick from the Magic. Aside from Turkoglu and Richardson, the Suns also sent forward Earl Clark to Orlando.
It was a major move for the Magic, who refused to tweak their roster during the off season. “We needed a little bit more punch,” Magic president Otis Smith said. “After looking at our team through 25 games, we were missing a little something. I thought change was needed.”
