Sarah Palin officially steps down as Alaska governor (video)

Former US vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin has officially stepped down as Alaska governor, 18 months before the end of her term in office.

Free speech was a theme of her farewell address in Fairbanks on Sunday, as the outgoing governor scolded “some seemingly hell-bent on tearing down our nation” and warned Americans to “be wary of accepting government largess. It doesn’t come free”.

Right before Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell was sworn in as governor, Palin said she was resigning “to chart a new course to advance the state”.

The 45-year-old announced on July 3 that she would step down this month.
