“Paranormal Activity” Scares Up Box Office
The third installment of the “Paranormal Activity” horror film franchise gave the North American box office a much-needed wake up call as it earned an estimated $54 million over the weekend.
“Paranormal Activity 3” earned an additional $26 million in the international box office for an $80 million first-week total. The film, which revolves this time on two sisters’ encounter with an unseen entity, was produced with an estimated $5 million budget.
Two-week box office champ “Real Steel” dropped to second place with $11.3 million for a three-weekend global total of $153.3 million. “Footloose,” a remake of the 1980s classic, held on to third place with $10.9 million, which pushed its current total to $30.9 million. This week’s other new comer, “The Three Musketeers,” struggled with $8.8 million in North America, but boosted its global gross with $64.4 from the international box office. Rowan Atkinson’s “Johnny English” reborn had a dismal $3.8 million in its North American debut for eighth place this weekend.
