Pastor dead in Maryville church shooting
A pastor has been killed and other people injured in a shooting at a church in Illinois, the St. Lois Post Dispatch reported on Sunday.
The gunman walked into a service at the First Baptist Church in Maryville and exchanged words with Rev. Fred Winters and then shot him with a .45 caliber handgun, the state police said.
According to Officer Ralph Timmins, the semi-automatic pistol then jammed, and the gunman pulled out a knife and stabbed himself. Two men tackled him and were stabbed in the process. Timmins said they suffered wounds that are not life-threatening.
Winters was pronounced dead on arrival in a nearby hospital of a gunshot wound to the chest.
The gunman is a 27-year-old man from Troy, Illinois, whose motive remains unknown. Timmins said he was taken into custody and sent to a local hospital for surgery.
