Plane sucks luggage container into engine

Hundreds of passengers were left stranded Monday when a metal baggage container was sucked into the engine of a Japan Airlines Boeing 747 as it was leaving a terminal gate at the Los Angeles International Airport.

No injuries were reported among the 245 passengers and 18 crew members aboard Flight 61, which was grounded after the 1:30 p.m. accident.

The metal box was pulled from a baggage cart into the engine of the jumbo jet when the pilot pulled away from Gate 101 at the Tom Bradley International Terminal, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Travel arrangements were made for its stranded passengers and the plane was towed to a hangar for inspection, the newspaper said.

An investigation was underway. There was speculation the baggage cart had been placed too close to the jetliner.
