“Police Academy” Star Bubba Smith, Dead at 66

Bubba Smith, who played the character of Lt. Moses Hightower in the “Police Academy” movies, has died. He was 66.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the body of Smith, whose real name is Charles Aaron Smith, was found in his Los Angeles home on Wednesday by a caretaker. Initial investigation suggests that the former NFL star died of natural causes. Before landing the Hightower role, Smith was first a college football star with the Michigan State University Spartans, with whom the 6 ft. 7 in. defensive end earned All American honors in 1965 and 1966. Smith also played in the historic 10-10 tie between the Spartans and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on November 19, 1966.

Smith went on to become an NFL star after the Baltimore Colts made him the No.1 overall pick in the 1967 draft. He won his only NFL ring with the Colts in Super Bowl V. He retired in 1976 as a Houston Oilers player. He played for the Oakland Raiders from 1973 to 1974.
