Polygamist Leader Warren Jeffs Gets Life Imprisonment

Polygamist Warren Jeffs has been sentenced to more than 100 years in prison for having sexual relations with two young members of his Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints sect.

A 12-person jury handed Jeffs the full 99-year jail term for aggravated sexual assault on the charge that the 55-year-old self-styled prophet “married” and had sex with a 12-year-old girl. Jeffs also received the maximum penalty of 20 years on a sexual assault charge for having intercourse with a 15-year-old. The victims are only two of Jeffs’s 24 under-17 “wives,” prosecutors said, according to the Christian Science Monitor. Jeffs reportedly fathered a child with the 15-year-old girl.

Prosecutors used documents seized during a 2008 raid on the sect’s Eldorado, Texas, ranch. The documents included an audio recording where Jeffs is allegedly heard having sex with one of his victims. Sentenced along with Jeffs were seven other sect members, who received punishments of up to 75 years in jail.
