Portugal Loses Nani to Injury

Three days before World Cup action kicks off, the event lost another star as Portugal winger Nani went down with a collarbone injury. Portugal announced on Tuesday that Nani suffered the injury while training on Friday.

“He is in pain. We carried out tests and the upshot is that he is not fit to compete,” said Portugal coach Carlos Queiroz in ruling out one of the team’s reliable stars. Nani had an impressive second half of the season for Manchester United, who finished second to Chelsea in the recently concluded Premier League season. The 23-year-old Nani, who scored three goals for Portugal during qualifying, was expected to help the country win their first World Cup title.

Nani is the latest star to join the World Cup sidelines, following the likes of English captain Rio Ferdinand and Germany’s Michael Ballack. Ivory Coast’s Didier Drogba is still recovering from a broken arm and still under observation. Also in danger of being ruled out of the World Cup is the Netherlands’ Arjen Robben, who is already sure of missing his country’s first match against Denmark.
