Premier League: Arsenal vs. Portsmouth
Portsmouth face the daunting task of trying to secure their first points of the new campaign at Emirates Stadium this afternoon.
Having lost several players since last season, Pompey have now lost their first two games. In a recent interview, Paul Hart said he is hoping to get a couple of players before the transfer window closes in September.
“Until we get some new blood in, this is what we’ll have to do—graft and be organized, he said.
Arsenal will start this match as favorites after beating Everton at Goodison Park on the opening day of the season. The Gunners attacked the Toffees with zing and then won a Champions League qualifier at Celtic despite not being on top form.
Arsene Wenger will want more of the same in order to allow no room for suggestions that his team’s position as a member of Premier League’s Big Four is in danger.
Portsmouth last beat the Gunners in 1958, winning 5-4 at Fratton Park in the old First Division while they last won at Arsenal in October 1954.
Eduardo has recovered from a groin problem, but Theo Walcott has again been ruled out because of a back injury. Tomas Rosicky, Samir Nasri, Lukasz Fabianski and Johan Djourou all continue their rehabilitation.
Game time is 3:00 p.m. (10:00 a.m. ET).
UPDATE: Abou Diaby’s first-half double and goals from William Gallas and Aaron Ramsey helped Arsenal ease their way to an impressive 4-1 victory against Portsmouth at the Emirates Stadium. Watch the highlights below:
