Premier League: Aston Villa vs. Liverpool

After a devastating defeat against Arsenal, Aston Villa will try to bounce back as they take on a struggling Liverpool at Villa Park this evening.

Last Sunday, Cesc Fabregas came off the bench and bagged a brace as the Gunners climbed to second in the Premier League table with a 3-0 win over Martin O’Neill’s side.

Now, the Villains are fifth in the standings, having beaten both Manchester United and Chelsea of late. They are currently five points above the Reds and a victory at home would leave Rafa Benitez’s men with lots of work to do if they are going to stake their claim for a spot in the Champions League next season.

Villa, on the other hand, are entering a crucial stage and a poor run now could see the Midlands-based club fade away like they did last term.

Meanwhile Serie A club Inter Milan is planning a sensational move for Steven Gerrard, according to Italian publication Corriere dello Sport. However, Inter boss Jose Mourinho will face fierce competition from La Liga giants FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, who have also been alerted to the Liverpool captain’s potential availability.

UPDATE: A late goal by Fernando Torres gave Liverpool a 1-0 away victory over Aston Villa. The Spanish striker capitalized on a loose pass from Stephen Warnock before drilling a low shot past goalkeeper Brad Friedel in the 93rd-minute.
