Premier League: Burnley vs. Chelsea
Chelsea became the Premier League leader once again, overtaking Manchester United after a 3-0 victory over Birmingham City at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday. Tonight, the Blues will be visiting Burnley at Turf Moor.
Florent Malouda and Frank Lampard were the heroes on Wednesday. Malouda gave his team the first goal in the fifth minute while Lampard scored two goals to lift his team into the top spot–ending Birmingham’s 15-match undefeated streak.
Meanwhile, Chelsea team manager Carlo Ancelotti will be shuffling his player cards. He said that if his players need rest, they will be rotated well. His team has six key players who are over 30 years old and player management will be their key to winning the EPL. He acknowledged that it was “important to control fatigue” to reduce the risk of his players getting injured.
The six players who are passed 30 years include Ricardo Carvalho, Deco, Frank Lampard, Michael Ballack, Nicolas Anelka and Ivory Coast captain Didier Drogba, who will be absent in tonight’s match, as he just came back from the African Nations Cup.
The edge will be on the West Londoners as they have already defeated Burnley 3-0 at Stamford Bridge in August. A win for the Blues will give a four-point lead ahead of Arsenal and Manchester United, who will meet on Sunday. Also, Burnley have lost three games under new boss Brian Laws.
UPDATE: John Terry scored the winning goal as Chelsea claimed a vital 2-1 victory against the Clarets to go four points clear in the Premier League. Nicolas Anelka had given the Blues the lead before Steven Fletcher leveled matters.
