Premier League: Chelsea Rout Wigan Athletic
For the second-straight match, defending Premier League champions Chelsea scored six goals without giving up one, overwhelming a hapless Wigan Athletic side a week after opening the season with a similar rout against West Bromwich Albion at Stamford Bridge.
The Latics matched the Blues’ energy in the first 30 minutes to give the home fans at the DW Stadium something to cheer about following an anemic performance against Blackpool last week. However, Chelsea began to show their true form in the 33rd minute as Florent Malouda sent home a rebound off a Frank Lampard shot that was tipped away by Wigan captain Chris Kirkland.
Nicolas Anelka opened the second half with two quick goals in the 47th and 51st minutes to give Carlo Ancelotti’s Chelsea a 3-0 lead, which signaled the beginning of the end for the home team. Substitute Salomon Kalou had his own brace late in the match, firing one on 77 minutes and another one eight minutes later. Yossi Benayoun completed the dominating performance for the Blues with a goal inside stoppage time.
Chelsea now sit atop the table alone with a perfect six points after two matches, while Wigan dropped to the bottom after giving up their tenth goal in just two matches.
