Premier League: Chelsea Start Title Defense with a Bang
Holders Chelsea gave newcomers West Bromwich Albion a baptism of fire as Didier Drogba started his Premier League season with a hat-trick to help the Blues secure the full three points with a 6-0 victory on Saturday at Stamford Bridge.
Florent Malouda opened the floodgates for Carlo Ancelotti’s boys in the sixth minute before Drogba fired the first of his three goals just before the halftime whistle. Chelsea continued where they left off after the restart as Drogba netted his second goal in the 55th minute. Frank Lampard joined the rampage with a 63rd-minute goal that gave the home team a 4-0 lead. Drogba completed his hat-trick five minutes later while Malouda sealed the rout with a strike just before the final whistle.
Despite the strong showing, Ancelotti said his boys did “nothing special” to get the easy win. “We did our job, nothing special. This team can show this kind of play, scoring a lot of goals.”
West Brom boss Roberto Di Matteo said he had expected his team to have a hard time against the champions, but not as the scoreline suggested. “Playing the champions away on the first day of the season, you know it is going to be a tough day for you but I thought the scoreline was a bit harsh.”
