Premier League: Chelsea vs. Aston Villa
Second-placed Chelsea takes on Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge this afternoon fresh from a 5-0 thumping of basement club Portsmouth on Wednesday.
Didier Drogba scored twice on that game to take his tally for the season to 30 goals in all competitions. The 32-year-old Ivorian striker limped off before the finish at Fratton Park but manager Carlo Ancelotti expects him to be fit to face Villa.
With seven games left to play this term, the Blues have the chance to overthrow Manchester United at the top of the Premier League—at least for a few hours. However, the West Londoners are without defenders Branislav Ivanovic, Jose Bosingwa, Ashley Cole and Michael Essien.
Martin O’Neill’s side will be trying to win its second straight match against Chelsea after their 2-1 victory at Villa Park in October. The Villains currently lie 7th in the table, four points behind fourth-placed Tottenham. They are unbeaten in the EPL this year, but seven draws in their last 10 matches has seriously hurt their hopes of getting the last Champions League qualification spot.
The match kicks-off at 15:00 GMT.
UPDATE: Frank Lampard scored four goals to help Chelsea beat Aston Villa 7-1 in the Premier League. He was assisted by a second-half double from Florent Malouda and a late stike from Salomon Kalou.
