Premier League: Chelsea vs. Birmingham
Chelsea will host the visiting Birmingham squad at Stamford Bridge for the Barclays Premier League on Wednesday, January 27.
Chelsea is currently in third place in the EPL table but they can still regain the top spot, which currently belongs to Manchester United, with three points over Alex McLeish’s side. They are unbeaten in their last six matches in the league and have scored 14 goals. The West Londoners also hold the best home record this season, They have taken 31 points out of a possible 33 and have scored 34 out of 11 matches, averaging more than 3 goals alongside Arsenal.
Birmingham, on the other hand, is in the 8th spot with 33 points. They are on a superb run for a club record of 12 matches without defeat. Yes, they haven’t defeated Chelsea in their last 16 matches, but they are the only club that stopped Carlo Ancelotti’s men from scoring this term–on their Boxing Day goalless draw at St. Andrews.
Birmingham will be missing the some of its key players who are injured. The players include Carsley, Murphy, Tainio, O`Connor and Parnaby. For the Chelsea squad, players who are out include Jose Bosingwa and Michael Essien (both with knee injuries). Those who are currently in their African Cup duty are also absent namely: Saloman Kalou, Didier Drogba and John Obi Mikel.
UPDATE: Chelsea returned to the top of the EPL with a 3-0 win over Birmingham City at Stamford Bridge. Florent Malouda opened the scoring in the fifth minute and two goals from Frank Lampard ended Birmingham’s 15-match unbeaten streak.
