Premier League: Chelsea vs. Birmingham
However, the West Londoners are coming off a disappointing draw at West Ham United over the weekend. For about half a dozen matches, they’ve been inconsistent, and what they need at this point is a very resounding victory.
Alex McLeish’s men, on the other hand, are the league’s in-form team at the moment, with 8 matches without conceding a goal and with run of nine games without a loss. This amazing run of results means they now sit seventh, above last season’s runners-up Liverpool.
History, though, is very much on Carlo Ancelotti’s side as Birmingham has never beaten Chelsea in the EPL, a run which has taken in ten matches.
Meanwhile Daniel Sturridge is set to make his first EPL start for Ancelotti’s side this afternoon since moving from Manchester City this summer.
The 20-year-old striker will now be charged with keeping Chelsea’s title hopes alive in the absence of Nicolas Anelka—sidelined by a knee problem—and Didier Drogba, who is off to the African Cup of Nations with the Ivory Coast.
Sturridge has no goals in five appearances for the club. But last season, he scored four goals in 26 appearances for the Citizens.
The match kicks-off at 12:45 p.m. GMT.
UPDATE: The Blues missed the chance to go seven points clear at the top of the EPL when they were held to a 0-0 draw at Birmingham.
