Premier League: Chelsea vs. West Ham
Chelsea can return to the top of the Premier League, for 24 hours at least, with a win against West Ham United at Stamford Bridge this afternoon.
The Blues have surrendered the EPL lead back to Manchester United and allowed Arsenal to draw back level on points. Now they must produce a stellar performance to resume the chase for the title.
However, Chelsea will be without their first and second-choice goalkeepers. Hilario was ruled out with a groin problem, and with Petr Cech still out, it means Carlo Ancelotti must rely on Ross Turnbull, who will be making his first league start for the West Londoners.
Cech and Hilario now face a race to be fit for Tuesday’s Champions League clash with Inter Milan. Jose Bosingwa, Michael Essien, Ashley Cole and Ricardo Carvalho are also out because of injuries.
West Ham’s 2-1 defeat to Bolton at Upton Park last week leaves them on 27 points, three above the relegation zone with ten matches remaining. But manager Gianfranco Zola believes his side will ensure survival in the EPL should they take 10 points from their remaining games.
“We have to pick ourselves up and go again this week as we have a massive game to come at Chelsea,” the Italian told the club’s official website.
The match kicks-off at 15:00 GMT (10:00 am ET).
UPDATE: Didier Drogba scored twice as the Blues went back to the top of the Premier League with a comfortable 4-1 victory over West Ham.
