Premier League: Liverpool Notch 1st Win

Fernando Torres came to the rescue of Liverpool on Sunday against West Bromwich Albion, scoring the lone goal to give The Reds their first full three points in the new Premier League season.

Liverpool, who were shamed by Manchester City in a 0-3 loss last week, started aggressively in the first 45 minutes, with Torres making Baggies keeper Scott Carson go to work just a couple of minutes into the match. West Brom responded with two attempts that had the Anfield crowd gasping. Marc-Antoine Fortune had a good opportunity to score for the Baggies, but his low shot was blocked by Liverpool goal keeper Jose Reina. James Morrison also had an opportunity to score a goal but his long-range attempt went wide.

The restart saw the Baggies attempt to sneak in a few goals, but The Reds defense responded well and with Torres and Dirk Kuyt combining forces in offense, it became clearer as the match progressed that the hosts were ripe for a victory. The crucial goal came in the 65th minute when Torres, with the help of Dirk Kuyt, found the net with a volley that proved too fast for Carson.

The victory moved Liverpool to the middle of the table with four points after three matches.

In other matches: Manchester United 3-0 West Ham United; Bolton Wanderers 2-2 Birmingham City; Sunderland 1-0 Manchester City; and Aston Villa 1-0 Everton.
