Premier League: Liverpool vs. Birmingham
Liverpool takes on Birmingham City tonight (20:00 GMT) aiming to get their season back on track as round 12 of the English Premier League draws to a close.
Defeat is certainly not an option after an awful run of form which is in danger of spoiling a season which started with such optimism.
The Reds have won just once in their last eight matches in all competitions and Rafa Benitez fully understands the disappointment his players are feeling right now.
Martin Skrtel and Fabio Aurelio are back in the squad, but Steven Gerrard remains a doubt. Benitez has challenged Yossi Benayoun to fill the shoes of Gerrard if the skipper is still missing tonight’s game.
The Liverpool boss said: “Yossi is a key player for us. There was a time before when people had some doubts about him but we knew he always had quality.”
Alex McLeish’s side will be without Barry Ferguson and Murphy. O’Connor, Fahey, Tainio and Taylor are all doubts, but at least Joe hart is available to face the Reds.
UPDATE: Gerrard saved Liverpool from another defeat when his penalty earned a 2-2 draw at home to Birmingham. The result leaves the Reds in seventh spot, while Birmingham move another point clear of the relegation zone.
