Premier League: Liverpool vs. Burnley
Brian Laws’ Burnley is currently 19th in the Premier League standings with 27 points, one point behind Hull City. With only three games left, the Clarets will try to flare up their fading hopes of avoiding relegation with a victory over Liverpool at Turf Moor this afternoon. And Laws is calling on the fans to again play their part in inspiring Burnley to win.
“It`s all or nothing! There is no room for error,” the 48-year-old tactician said in a recent interview. “There might not be another bite of the cherry. This is the big weekend for us.”
However, Laws has a major worry over Clark Carlisle as he has an ankle injury. The centre-back turned his ankle in training this week and has a protective cast put on so he is a major doubt for today’s match. Should West Ham United beat Wigan Athletic on Saturday and Burnley lose to the Reds, their fate will be sealed.
Liverpool’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League are also vanishing and they need to keep winning to claim a Europa League spot. Rafa Benitez’s men are five points clear of Everton in seventh, but with the Anfield club playing its third game in seven days, a tired squad might play into Burnley’s hands.
Spain striker Fernando Torres will be missing for the Reds as he recovers from surgery but they are expected to include Israeli midfielder Yossi Benayoun who scored a hat-trick against the Clarets when the sides met in September.
The game starts at 15:00 GMT.
UPDATE: Steven Gerrard scored twice in a 4-0 win that put the Clarets to relegation.
