Premier League: Liverpool vs. Everton
Local rivals Everton and Liverpool will battle it out at Anfield this afternoon (12:45 GMT) for the 213th edition of the Merseyside derby.
This is one of those games that it’s like two siblings fighting. When the two clubs met last November, the Reds had been on a poor run—winning just two of their previous 11 matches— but they produced a compelling performance to beat the Toffees 2-0 at Goodison Park.
However, this time it will be different as David Moyes has some players back from injuries and added a few in the transfer window. He has Landon Donovan now and a healthy Mikel Arteta so that’s a big factor.
Rafa Benitez’s men have won four and drawn two of their last six Premier League games. They have not lost for over a month now but they still find themselves a point outside the Champions League places.
Everton, meanwhile, will not be intimidated by the Reds’ new-found stability at the back having also failed to ship a goal in their last three EPL matches, winning each game in the process.
Bad news for Liverpool fans because Fernando Torres and Glen Johnson remain sidelined, while Yossi Benayoun is out with a rib problem. For Everton supporters, Yakubu Aiyegbeni and Joseph Yobo are available after returning from international duty at the African Nations Cup in Angola.
UPDATE: Liverpool defeated Everton 1-0 to climb to fourth place in the Premier League, thanks to Dirk Kuyt’s header 10 minutes after half-time.
