Premier League: Liverpool vs. Portsmouth
Liverpool takes on last-placed Portsmouth in tonight’s Premier League action hoping to give their faltering top-four hopes a boost. The Reds really need to get things back on track if they’re going to challenge for that Champions League spot.
After a disappointing loss to Wigan Athletic last week, Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez told the press he wanted his players to stop blaming each other and to start taking responsibility on the field. Their recent Europa League defeat in Lille is another blow to their confidence so maximum points at home to Pompey is a must for Benitez’ side.
The weekend’s results have left the sixth-placed Anfield club four points adrift of the CL places, with Tottenham and Manchester City threatening to make it a two-way scuffle for fourth.
Portsmouth, on the other hand, have their work cut out if they are to escape relegation but will be buoyed by their 2-0 win over the Reds at Fratton Park earlier in the season.
Meanwhile superstar striker Fernando Torres has admitted he will think about his future at Liverpool if club owners do not buy the players needed to turn them into EPL contenders.
The match kicks-off at 20:00 GMT (4:00 p.m. ET).
UPDATE: Torres scored twice to inspire the Reds to a 4-1 victory over Portsmouth. Ryan Babel and Alberto Aquilani added goals in between the Spaniard’s strikes, before Nadir Belhadj hit a late consolation.
