Premier League: Liverpool vs. Stoke City
Liverpool will go into their Premier League clash against Stoke City this afternoon after their disappointing FA Cup exit at the hands of the Royals on Wednesday.
With the Reds out of the UEFA Champions League, FA and League Cups, and 12 points behind Chelsea in the EPL title race, Rafa Benitez‘s season is rapidly crumbling around him. They have only the Europa League left to play for this season and the Spaniard is under more pressure than ever.
“We are not playing well and we feel sorry for our fans,” said Benitez. “The fans know they have seen us play really well over the last five years and also that we can improve and do better.”
However, former Liverpool captain Ronnie Whelan called for Rafa to be axed. “He should have gone a long time ago, they have got to do it now,” Whelan told BBC Radio 5 Live.
Apparently, what passed for the Reds in midweek’s FA Cup shock defeat was an insult to the great players who have worn the famous Liver bird club badge.
The Potters, on the other hand, currently sit 10th in the league standings, and six points behind Liverpool who will be looking to close the gap on fourth placed Manchester City.
Will the Merseyside club get maximum points against Stoke or will they slip up again?
The match kicks-off at 12:45 UK (7:45 a.m. ET) at the Britannia Stadium.
UPDATE: The Reds’ miserable week continued at Stoke City as Robert Huth scored a last-gasp leveler in a 1-1 draw.
Sotirios Kyrgiakos had given Liverpool the lead but the German equalized in the final minute to stun the visitors.
