Premier League: Liverpool vs. Aston Villa
Liverpool host Aston Villa tonight in the Premier League aiming for its second win of the season, while the Villains hunt the first points of their campaign after disappointing defeats against Wigan and Rapid Vienna.
Martin O’Neill is hoping that his squad can avoid defeat this evening to instil some much needed confidence. However, the Reds have enjoyed success against them in recent years having won eleven, drawn three and lost only two of the previous 16 EPL matches played between the clubs at Anfield.
The Reds bounced back from their opening defeat to Tottenham with a 4-0 success over Stoke City. However, Liverpool remain a team rocking on its knees following the exit of Xabi Alonso and several injuries that has left the club looking bare.
Meanwhile, Curtis Davies is doubtful for tonight’s game after a recurrence of his shoulder injury. The 24-year-old Villa defender suffered the setback during the latter stages of the Europa League clash against Vienna. Rookie Shane Lowry is most likely to replace him.
Luke Young will also miss tonight’s game following the death of his brother.
The game starts at 8 pm (3 pm ET).
UPDATE: The Villains handed Liverpool its second defeat of the season with a 3-1 victory at Anfield. An own goal by Lucas Leiva and a glancing header from Curtis Davies gave Villa a 2-0 interval lead before Fernando Torres pulled one back for the Reds.
