Premier League: Man United Trip Sunderland, Keep Title Hopes Alive
Manchester United kept their hopes of winning the Premier League pennant alive as they edged Sunderland at the Stadium of Light, 1-0. Nani drove home what turned out to be the winning goal in the 28th minute, ensuring that the league winner would be known only next Sunday.
United’s victory came several hours after Chelsea stretched their lead on the table to four points with a 2-0 win against Liverpool at Anfield. The championship will be decided next Sunday when United host Stoke at Old Trafford and Chelsea face Wigan. Manchester, however, need a victory against Stoke coupled with a Chelsea loss or draw to maintain their hold of the Premier League title.
Learning about the Blues’ thrashing of Liverpool before the match, United came out firing early with Wayne Rooney forcing Sunderland keeper Craig Gordon to make a brilliant save in the fourth minute. United kept the pressure on with Ryan Giggs and Dimitar Berbatov keeping the Sunderland defenders on their toes, before Nani finally struck the low shot that extended United’s title chase for another match.
