Premier League: Manchester City vs. Burnley
Big-spending Manchester City take on Burnley this afternoon hoping to build on their 3-0 win over Wigan Athletic, a result which came after a spotty run of form which severely damaged their Champions League hopes.
The Clarets are currently in the relegation zone. They have gone eight Premier League games without a victory while losing seven. The Citizens, on the other hand, are presently fifth with 56 points– fighting for the last European spot with Tottenham.
Roberto Mancini’s men have won three of their last five games, drawing one and losing the other at home to Everton. But if Brian Laws’ side beat City, they will draw level on points with West Ham, who takes on the Toffees tomorrow.
Stephen Ireland has been ruled out of today’s game with an ankle problem. The 23-year-old midfielder missed Monday’s win over the Latics and has not made the progress Mancini hoped for.
Burnley, on the other hand, will be boosted by the return of Steven Caldwell following a four-month absence with a groin injury, while Stephen Jordan is looking to shake off a knee problem.
The match kicks-off at 17:30 BST.
UPDATE: The Citizens returned to fourth place in the EPL after a comfortable 6-1 victory over Burnley at a sodden Turf Moor.
