Premier League: Manchester City vs Liverpool
Manchester City will host Liverpool in their match for Barclays Premier League at Anfield Sunday, February 21.
The Citizens are currently in fourth spot with 45 points, just 1 point ahead from fifth placer Liverpool. Having said that, City will make all efforts to stay in their position against their closest competitor. Saturday’s fixture is very important for both parties because a victory could give a significant advantage in securing a spot in the European Cup next season.
City’s midfielder Patrick Vieira will be absent in the match against the Reds this Sunday due to a three match suspension. Football Association (FA) punished Vieira following a clash with Stoke’s Glenn Whelan in midweek.
Other Manchester City players who will also miss the game include Martin Petrov (knee injury), Vincent Kompany (groin) and Carlos Tevez who is still in Argentina dealing with a domestic issue.
City coach Roberto Mancini wants Tevez back as soon as possible.
“I hope he comes back as quickly as possible. I am frustrated he is not with us. It is a problem as we have some very important games coming up and we need him.
“I don’t think he will be here on Sunday but maybe he will come back Monday for the Stoke game.”
In Liverpool’s camp, center-back Sotiros Kyrgiakos will miss the game to serve his 2nd game out of a three-match ban, while Fernando Torres and Glen Johnson will still be sidelined due to knee injuries.
Midfielder Yossi Benayoun, on the other hand, could return after he was sidelined for a broken rib since January 13.
UPDATE: Manchester City and Liverpool had to settle for a dire goalless draw after an intense encounter at Eastlands.
