Premier League: Manchester United Escape Liverpool

Dimitar Berbatov saved Manchester United from a second-straight collapse, as the Bulgarian striker completed a hat-trick that gave the Red Devils a 3-2 victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford.

Berbatov headed home a John O’Shea cross six minutes to time to give Sir Alex Ferguson’s boys a much-needed win after they squandered a two-goal lead. Berbatov, whose anemic performance last season made him a non-entity among Old Trafford fans, showed his worth four minutes before halftime as he gave the home side the lead. Berbatov made it 2-0 on 58 minutes after masterfully controlling a Nani cross before sending the ball to the net with a back-to-the-goal shot that sailed past Liverpool keeper Reina.

Liverpool would not go away easily though as Steven Gerrard beat Edwin van der Sar following a penalty awarded after Johnny Evans brought down Fernando Torres in the area. Gerrard evened the count on 70 minutes following a free-kick, but Berbatov would complete his hat-trick 14 minutes later to save United from a sure lashing from Ferguson.
