Premier League: Manchester United vs. Aston Villa
Can Aston Villa beat a high-flying Manchester United for a second time?
Martin O’ Neill’s side defeated the Red Devils 1-0 in the reverse fixture in December and United cannot afford to drop more points as they try to overhaul Chelsea at the top of the Premier League table.
Wayne Rooney and company go into the game on the back of four consecutive wins, with the 24-year-old striker in magnificent form. Rooney has already scored 21 league goals this season for United, who have netted 15 goals in their last four matches while conceding just one.
For the Midlands side, a win tonight could be enough to pull them level with Liverpool and keep them well in the hunt for Champions League qualification. But unfortunately, the Villains have failed to score in five of their last six EPL games— failing to take significant advantage of the inconsistencies of their opponents in pursuit for that coveted fourth place.
Though Villa did leave Fulham last weekend with all three points, their form in the league prior to that has seen them fall to 7th spot.
O’Neill is without the services of Stephen Warnock and Nigel Reo-Coker because of injuries while the Red Devils may welcome back Serbian defender Nemanja Vidic, who has been nursing a calf problem.
The match kicks-off at 19:45 GMT.
UPDATE: The Red Devils held on for a 1-1 draw against Aston Villa, despite being down to 10 men for the majority of the game. United were reduced to 10 men when Nani was sent off for a two-footed challenge on Stiliyan Petrov and faces a three-match ban.
