Premier League: Manchester United vs. Chelsea
There’s a massive game in the Barclays Premier League this afternoon. Manchester United go head to head with Chelsea at Old Trafford in a potentially decisive match in the race for English football’s top honors.
The Blues are already out of the UEFA Champions League and trail the Red Devils in the EPL so will be desperate to take three points from the game. Sir Alex Ferguson’s side, meanwhile, can open up a four point lead over Chelsea with a home victory. But if they are to do so they will have to handle it without the injured Wayne Rooney.
The England striker suffered minor ligament damage to his right ankle during United’s 2-1 loss to Bayern Munich in the first leg of their CL quarterfinal showdown on Tuesday. He was hurt while competing for the ball with Mario Gomez and the 24-year-old immediately signaled to the bench that he had to come off the field.
According to reports, Rooney would be sidelined for two to three weeks, and Dimitar Berbatov, United’s second-highest scorer, is likely to try to fill his boots upfront. Wayne’s absence gives the Bulgarian striker the chance to show Ferguson he can be a consistent performer.
Didier Drogba has recuperated from a leg problem and spearheads the West Londoners’ attack. Michael Essien Ashley Cole, Ricardo Carvalho, Jose Bosingwa and Branislav Ivanovic remain sidelined because of injury.
The match kicks-off at 12:45 BST.
