Premier League: Manchester United vs. Portsmouth
With Chelsea playing Arsenal tomorrow, defending champions Manchester United have the chance to return to the top of the Premier League table if they beat bottom placed Portsmouth this afternoon (15:00 GMT) at Old Trafford.
Manchester’s dismantling of Arsenal last weekend coupled with the Blues being held to a 1-1 draw at Hull in midweek, has put the Red Devils within two points of the summit. The performance of United really surprised me as they produced an excellent team routine and ripped the Gunners’ defense into pieces.
For Avram Grant, the stakes are higher with the beleaguered club desperate for points as the clock ticks down on their battle for survival. The question is will Pompey record the fifth Premier League victory before the club acquires yet another new owner?
Sir Alex Ferguson’s men, on the other hand, have won all three of their league matches this year and hope to continue their winning ways. They have also won all six EPL home meetings against Portsmouth, conceding just one goal.
Wayne Rooney is in gleaming form and the Pompey back-line must be dreading coming up against the 24-year-old striker. He has now scored 20 goals in the league and is five ahead of nearest rivals Jermain Defoe of Tottenham and Chelsea’s Didier Drogba.
Meanwhile Nemanja Vidic is back in contention. The Serbian has been missing since suffering pain in his leg prior to the encounter with Wigan Athletic at the end of December.
UPDATE: The Red Devils returned to the top of the league after a 5-0 win over Portsmouth. Rooney, Dimitar Berbatov and three own goals secured victory for United.
