Prince William Becomes Pauper William
Second in line to the British throne Prince William of Wales spent the night in the streets last week after accepting a challenge from Centrepoint, a charity for the homeless. He accepted to help gain focus for the plight of the homeless.
The British royal and knight, aged 27, spent the night using only a sleeping bad and cardboard boxes at a spot near Blackfriars Bridge. The temperature: -4 degrees centigrade.
The night was highlighted when he and his group was almost run over by a road sweeper. He was joined in the night by Centrepoint CEO Seyi Obakin and Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, private secretary of the Prince and his brother, Prince Henry of Wales. The prince felt shaken from the experience.
“I cannot, after one night, even begin to imagine what it must be like to sleep rough on London’s streets night after night,” he said about all that he has experienced. “I hope that by deepening my understanding of the issue, I can help do my bit to help the most vulnerable on our streets.”
The following morning he took a tour of some of the West End rough sleeping spots then cooked breakfast for some young homeless people in a center in Soho.
He has been a patron of Centrepoint since the death of her mother Diana, Princess of Wales who was also a patron of the charity. In fact, it was her who introduced the future King of England to the organization.
