Princess Diana Iconic Dress Fetches $276,000
The dress that was used by the late Diana, Princess of Wales during her first official engagement as the fiancé of the Prince of Wales was sold at an auction for a quarter of a million dollars.
It is the black taffeta dress that the princess wore in 1981 when she attended a black tie event with Prince Charles at the Royal Opera House. It was the dress that will establish Diana as the most glamorous member of the Royal Family. She was 19-years-old at that time.
Diana returned the dress to creators Elizabeth and David Emanuel, who also created her wedding dress, before her wedding as she was shedding weight. She asked them to alter it for her. The couple instead created her a new one, as it will be easier when compared to altering the original.
The original was then put in a black bin bag at the garage of David Emanuel where it will stay for the next twenty years.
It was bought by Jorge Yarur of the Fundacion Museo de la Moda in Chile for 192,000 British pounds (276,000 USD), which is almost four times the initial estimate of 50,000 pounds.
