Protests Erupt after Sri Lanka Elections

Protests are being demonstrated across the streets of Colombo, Sri Lanka for the alleged widespread electoral fraud during the last presidential

President Mahinda Rajapaksa took a landslide victory with more than 17 percentage point margin over his former army chief Sarath Fonseka in the January 26 elections, according to official results.

It should be noted that electoral protests happened very rarely in the island nation so that the current rallies are seen to be an intense sign of the citizens’ feelings toward the election results that saw the pitting of two former allies.

The candidates are considered as heroes for their cooperative roles in the defeat of the Tamil Tiger rebels last May.

Many believe that the computers used during the elections were rigged. Election officials however, insist that the results are accurate and that the opposition has never shown any proof that corruption and fraud were as wide spread as they claim it to be.
