“Puss in Boots” Leads Weekend Box Office
Ghosts, drunken writers, time stealers, and dancers were no match to a “Puss in Boots” as the “Shrek” animated spin-off easily topped the North American box office this weekend.
“Puss in Boots” grossed an estimated $34 million in the United States and Canada to relegate last week’s record-breaking debut “Paranormal Activity 3” to second place with $18.5 million. Justin Timberlake’s “In Time,” a sci-fi movie about a dystopian world where time is the new currency, landed in third place with $12 million, while the remake “Footloose” added $5.4 million to push its North American box-office total to $38.4 million.
The biggest disappointment this weekend was Johnny Depp’s tribute to writer Hunter S. Thompson, “The Rum Diary,” which flopped with a measly $5 million in its debut. “The Rum Diary” was expected to at least fight for the top spot considering that Depp is a proven box-office draw with three billion-dollar earning movies to his name.
