World Cup 2010 Qualifier: Portugal vs. Denmark
Portugal will face Denmark tonight knowing that defeat will end their chances of qualifying for next year’s World Cup.
Carlos Queiroz’s side is in grave danger of missing the grand football event for the first time since 1998, as they trail group leaders Denmark by seven points in the standings, and second-place Hungary by four.
The Hungarians never expected to be second, with 13 points.
With a team that includes Cristiano Ronaldo, as well as players like Simao and Deco, you wouldn’t think Portugal would have problems scoring goals. Unfortunately, Selecção have endured a miserable World Cup qualifying campaign so far as they have managed only two wins in six games.
The Danes on the other hand have been riding high on form in these qualifiers and have surprisingly fared much better than Sweden.
Game time is 8:00 p.m. CET (2:00 p.m. ET) at Parken Stadium, Copenhagen.
UPDATE: Liedson da Silva scored a last-minute goal to secure Portugal a 1-1 draw with Denmark. The Selecção are now fourth in the group and more distant to the competition in South Africa.
