Rafael Benitez Out as Inter Milan Coach
Champions League holders Inter Milan have parted ways with manager Rafael Benitez, ending a partnership that lasted less than six months.
Inter announced on Thursday that Benitez had been fired following a public outburst against club officials and players. “Inter Milan and Rafael Benitez can announce that they have reached a mutually satisfactory agreement for the early termination of his contract,” the club said in a statement. Benitez lambasted the club board on Saturday during a press conference following the Nerazzurri’s 3-0 victory over TP Mazembe in the World Club Cup final. In that outburst, Benitez suggested that the board did not give him enough respect and assistance, especially in his bid to get new players.
The outburst obviously did not sit well with club president Massimo Moratti, who described the incident as the “final straw” that led to the bitter split. “Aside from what Benitez said which were the final straw, I wasn’t very happy with the manner in which things had gone up to the World Club Cup,” said Moratti, who added that “the things he said put me in such a position that I had neither the will nor the patience to wait any longer.”
