Rafael Nadal Collapses During Press Conference
As expected, Rafael Nadal moved on to the 4th round of the 2011 U.S. Open on Sunday with a straight sets victory over Argentine David Nalbandian, but what made the Spanish ace headline material was what transpired after the match.
Nadal was answering the usual after-match questions in a press conference when the former world no.1 suddenly suffered cramps in the front and back of his right leg. Nadal could be seen slowly slouching down his chair as he writhed in pain before finally collapsing on the floor, where he lay for several minutes as trainers attended to him.
Nadal, who defeated Nalbandian 7-6, 6-1, 7-5, continued the press conference after several minutes and shrugged off the incident as nothing more than a usual occurrence that just happened to have taken place at the wrong place and time. “It was just a normal cramp that could have happened anywhere,” he said, according to Time. “But it happened in the press room. Anywhere else, nobody would have noticed.”
