Detroit Red Wings vs. Pittsburgh Penguins Game 5
The 2009 Stanley Cup finals are all squared up at 2-2 after the Pittsburgh Penguins won Game 4 at home over the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday.
Detroit shut down the vaunted Pittsburgh offense in the first two games, winning both by identical 3-1 scores in the Motor City.
In Game 3, Sergei Gonchar scored a go-ahead goal 10:29 into the third period to lift the Penguins past the Red Wings 4-2 at the Mellon Arena.
The action heads to Joe Louis Arena tonight for Game 5 where Pavel Datsyuk appears ready to make his debut in the 2009 championships. He declared himself ready to go following Saturday’s morning skate.
The MVP finalist hasn’t played since May 19, when he blocked a shot with his foot against the Blackhawks in Game 2 of the Western Conference finals.
In the 19 previous times the Stanley Cup has been tied 2-2, the team winning Game 5 has gone on to win on 14 occasions. The last team to lose the fifth game in this scenario and come back to win the championship was Tampa Bay, which won Game 6 on the road in Calgary and then Game 7 in Tampa in 2004.
