Report Says Detroit Red Wings Owner to Acquire Pistons
Little Caesars owner Mike Ilitch could soon add another team to his growing Detroit empire. A source cited by the Associated Press claimed that current Detroit Pistons owner Karen Davidson has agreed to sell one of the most successful teams in the NBA to Ilitch, who already owns other Motor City teams Red Wings of the NHL and the MLB’s Tigers.
The source said only the financial terms of the deal are being ironed out, with Davidson reportedly planning to close the deal by the end of the month, when the new NBA season would begin. Davidson’s late husband, Bill, was at the helm of the Pistons organization when the team won its NBA titles in 1989, 1990, and 2004. Last year, the Pistons failed to qualify for the playoffs, the first time they missed the postseason since the 2000-2001 season.
Ilitch had said that he would buy the Pistons to ensure that the team stays in Detroit.
