Report: Shaquille O’Neal to Join Celtics
Shaquille O’Neal is reportedly close to sealing a contract with the Boston Celtics, the same team that ended his championship dreams last season while still playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers.
According to sources with knowledge of the negotiations, O’Neal would inform the Celtics of his intention to move to Boston on Wednesday. If the deal materializes, the 38-year-old center would likely receive the veteran’s minimum of $1.4 million due to salary cap constraints, unless the Celtics could work out a sign-and-trade deal with the Cavaliers. The length of the possible contract is still unclear, although O’Neal has expressed desire to play for two more years.
Boston has been shopping for big men in the off season to shore up its middle, as starting center Kendrick Perkins would likely be out until February due to an injury. The Celtics have already added Jermaine O’Neal during the summer, but general manager Danny Ainge still wanted another impact big man to complement Boston’s main trio of Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, and Kevin Garnett.
