Report: Mavs Trade Howard, Gooden for Wizards’ Butler, Haywood, Stevenson
Amid the easy-go-lucky atmosphere at the American Airlines Center in Dallas for the NBA All-Star Weekend, the Mavericks have silently completed a trade that could have a major impact on the team’s playoff drive. ESPN reports that the Mavericks and Washington Wizards have close a deal involving 7 players.
In the trade, the Mavs will get Caron Butler, Brendan Haywood, and DeShawn Stevenson for Josh Howard, Drew Gooden, Quinton Ross, and James Singleton. The deal is significant for the Wizards as they try to rebuild the team. Washington had previously been talking to the Houston Rockets about acquiring Tracy McGrady but the talks eventually fizzled out.
Dallas, on the other hand, may have finally found a suitable back up to center Erick Dampier, whose performance has suffered following injury, with the acquisition of Haywood. The Wizards wanted back up point guard Rodrigue Beaubois added to the deal but Mavericks owner Mark Cuban promptly rejected it, saying that the rookie point guard is “pretty much untouchable.”
