“Rio” Tops Weekend Box Office

All roads led to “Rio” over the weekend as the 20th Century Fox-distributed animated film opened with an estimated $40 million at the North American box office, setting the best debut of the year so far.

“Rio,” which was made by Blue Sky Studios of “Ice Age” fame, easily defeated Wes Craven’s “Scream 4,” which debuted with a quiet and disappointing $19.3 million despite a heavy promotional campaign. The opening weekend gross of “Rio,” which tells the story of two endangered bluebirds and features the voices of Jesse Eisenberg and Anne Hathaway, is slightly better than the $38 million debut made by “Rango” last month.

“Hop,” the top film the past two weeks, dropped to third with $11.2 million, pushing its total to $82.6 million. “Soul Surfer” and “Hanna” are neck-and-neck for fourth and fifth places with an estimated $7.4 million and $7.3 million, respectively. “Arthur,” the remake of the 1981 film, landed on sixth place after earning $6.9 million. The horror “Insidious,” the sci-fi mystery “Source Code,” historical drama “The Conspirator,” and fantasy comedy “Your Highness” rounded out the top 10.
