‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ tops box office with $54 million
Rise of the Planet of the Apes, the prequel to the 1968 classic that features an impressive motion-capture performance by Andy Serkis, ruled the North American box office this weekend, bringing in an estimated $54 million.
The movie, starring James Franco, Freida Pinto and John Lithgow, received mostly positive reviews. And it’s another victory for 20th Century Fox, as the film about genetically enhanced apes allegedly cost just $90 million.
Second place went to The Smurfs, with $21 million in ticket sales, followed by Cowboys & Aliens, which raked in $15.7 million, according to studio estimates.
Comedy date flick The Change-Up marked its debut weekend in fourth place with $13.5 million, as Captain America: The First Avenger showed some strength, slipping just two spots to fifth place with $13 million.
