Rooney Mara is “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”

Casting for the top-two leads in the English-remake of the Swedish film “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” is now complete, as director David Fincher has chosen Rooney Mara to play the story’s heroine, Lisbeth Salander.

The 24-year-old Mara will star opposite “James Bond” actor Daniel Craig, who will play investigative journalist Mikael Blomkvist. The film is based on the first book of the late Swedish writer Stieg Larsson’s best-selling Millennium trilogy, which also includes “The Girl Who Played with Fire” and “The Girl who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest.”

Mara beat out several more established actresses for the plum role, including Scarlett Johansson, Emma Watson, and Natalie Portman. Mara is relatively new in Hollywood, debuting only in 2005’s direct-to-video release, “Urban Legends: Bloody Mary,” where she played a bit part. She has also appeared in several television shows, including “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” and “ER.” She recently appeared in the 2010 remake of “A Nightmare on Elm Street” and will next be seen in Fincher’s “The Social Network,” which is about the founding of social networking site Facebook.
