Runner finishes marathon, then gives birth
A woman from Illinois, who was nearly 39 weeks pregnant, has given birth just hours after completing the 26 miles of the Chicago Marathon.
“Everybody just kind of stared as I’m running by,” Amber Miller told The Chicago Tribune.
Miller, 27, said she signed up for the competition before finding out she was pregnant. As the date of the race approached, she felt she could handle it and her doctor gave her the permission to run half and walk half. Miller’s husband ran with her and supported her along the way, but as she neared the final stages of the marathon, contractions kicked in. She gave birth to a healthy 7.7lb (3.5kg) girl, June.
“Nobody tried to do that,” she said. “It wasn’t too bad, you know? I have been running all the way up until this point anyway so I’m kind of used to it.”
The race was Miller’s third pregnant marathon. She finished the Wisconsin Marathon when she was 17 weeks pregnant and she also ran the Indianapolis Marathon when she was 18 weeks pregnant with son Caleb, now aged 19 months.
