Sandra Bullock’s ‘The Proposal’ tops North American box office

Disney’s romantic comedy The Proposal starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds debuted as the top film in the U.S. and Canada over the weekend with $34.1 million in ticket sales, according to box office tracking services. The movie puts last week’s number one, bachelor-party comedy The Hangover, in second spot with $26.9 million.

The Proposal did not only surpass industry’s prediction that it will open in mid-$20-million range, but also marked the best opening ever for Bullock. The 44-year-old actress last went to No. 1 in North America with the 1999 film Forces of Nature, which co-starred Ben Affleck. Her previous best opening was $17.6 million for the 2007 paranormal thriller Premonition.

Bullock stars as a ruthless publishing executive who forces her assistant (Reynolds) to marry her in order to avoid being deported to Canada. He agrees to participate in the charade, under the condition that he is promoted to the position of editor and his manuscript be published.
