Scientists discover planet made of diamonds [VIDEO]
Astronomers are claiming they’ve found a planet in the Milky Way made entirely of diamonds. They say the planet, named PSR J1719-1438, exists about 4,000 light years away from Earth, and is probably a fragment of a once-massive star which disintegrated and was crunched down into crystalline.
The odd planet was detected by an international research team from Australia, Germany, Italy, the United States and the United Kingdom, using the Parkes radio telescope in New South Wales. It has slightly more mass than Jupiter but is 20 times as dense. According to research team member Michael Keith, the remnant is likely composed mostly of carbon and oxygen and is coated by a thin layer of hydrogen and helium gases.
Astronomers detected a similar planet in February 2004, some 50 light-years from the Earth in the constellation Centaurus. They refer to it as ”Lucy” after the Beatles song ”Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds.”
Interesting. I wonder what De Beers is up to…
